UPI reports hundreds of communist troops with tanks and heavy antiaircraft fire attacked South Vietnamese paratroopers south of An Loc. More than 2,000 rockets and mortars were fired into the shattered provincial capital.
Police used tear gas and armored vehicles as antiwar demonstrators clashed on the University of Maryland campus at College Park. About 2,000 people were involved, 19 were arrested, and several dozen injuries reported amid window smashing and looting. Other protests occurred nationwide with mixed violence and arrests.

A Buffalo Creek kindergarten teacher alerted 20 pupils and a staffer after all fell sick from gas fumes, later identified as possible carbon monoxide. First aid teams treated the group. four children were hospitalized briefly but discharged. A contractor suggested a faulty thermostat may have triggered exhaust fumes entering the room.
Kent Slie aged 25 received a second life term without parole from Lincoln Circuit Court after conviction for kidnapping David Mullins 14 and Guy Plumley 13 in Hamlin area. Jury did not recommend mercy. He had a prior life sentence in December for the murder of Danny Collins 13 of Dunbar.
Belfast gunmen staged a second revenge act in two days as two 18 year old Catholic women engaged to British soldiers were shaved and doused with yellow paint and feathers after being forced into a truck in Belfast. A man was found dead after a car incident linked to the violence while a held soldier was later found with a boobytrap at Newton Hamilton defused.
In Charleston a suit alleges that an 18 percent annual interest rate violates state usury law. Plaintiffs Merry Scott Joseph T Katzeff and Mary Virginia Cole name Humble Oil American Oil Pure Oil Sun Oil Gulf Oil as defendants with operations in the state. Earlier suits target West Virginia banks and department stores over the rate.
Annette Gilly, Huddleston’s daughter, questioned earlier this month. Mrs Gilly’s 22 page confession read at her father’s bail hearing. The statement alleges Huddleston hired his son in law Paul Gilly to organize the murder after meetings with UMW officials Albert Pass and William Prater. Gilly named other top UMW figures including Tony Boyle. In Pittsburgh, Prater pleaded innocent to federal charges and a detainer for murder sits on him in Allegheny County jail on 200000 dollars bail. D.A. Jess D. Costa says murder charges will be filed next week.
Funeral services for Mrs. Nora Sarrett 92 of Arnett will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Arnett Chapel with Rev. Garten and Rev. Wade Webb officiating. Burial follows in the family cemetery. She died Wednesday at Beckley hospital after a long illness. Survived by daughter Nina Lawrence of Charleston three sons Lee of Crab Orchard Arthur and Roma of Arnett a brother Van of Beckley eight grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Friends may call at Armstrong Funeral Home Whitesville after 6 p.m. today.

Mrs Cora Price Wright 83 of Stanaford died Tuesday in a local hospital. Funeral services conducted by Rev Elmer Day will be at 2 p m Friday at Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor Chapel. Burial in Greenwood Memorial Park. She was born May 11 1888 in Grassy Meadows. Surviving are eight sons Alfred James Charlie Fred Willie Clyde Eddie Vaughn Wright. two daughters Annie Montgomery and Leona Wright. one sister Anne Clayton. 20 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p m Thursday at the funeral parlor.
Wallace Sheldon Craft 46 of Fayetteville died Wednesday in Oak Hill. Services at 2 p.m. Friday at Dodd Payne Funeral Home Fayetteville with Rev Leon E Nunley. Survived by wife Wanda, son Wallace Jr, daughter Elaine Patterson, two brothers, two sisters. Friends may call 5 to 9 p.m. today.

George N. Vannoy 64 of Shady Spring died of a heart condition at a Moundsville hospital. Funeral services were held in Sparta with burial in McGrady North Carolina. He was serving a 1 to 5 year sentence for the murder of his wife Mae on Oct 1 1970. Survivors include three daughters five sisters and other relatives. He was born Sept 12 1907 in Wilkes County North Carolina.
The funeral for James Hamton Brown 69 of 104 Anderson St Oak Hill will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Tyree Funeral Home Oak Hill with Rev Buddy L Caviniss officiating. Burial follows at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. He died after a long illness in an Oak Hill hospital. Born August 7 1902 in Union he was son of the late Henry and Ella Fisher Brown. Surviving are wife Mildred Persinger Brown two sons James of Fayetteville and Frank of Oak Hill a sister Edith Moore of Beards Fork and two grandchildren. Friends may call from 6 p.m.
The Communists asked that Vietnam peace talks resume next week while removing the U S bombing halt as a condition. The U S delegation confirmed receipt of the note, which stated the next session will be held April 27, but conference rules require all four delegations to approve each meeting.
Huntington West Virginia highway officials launch a two phase clean up amid debris removal and a haircut directive. Floyd Hillman District 2 Supervisor told employees to straighten up and cut hair and sideburns, targeting flagmen and other workers in direct view of motorists.
Danny Young, 27, of Rhodell, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in January and was sentenced to one to five years. He was taken to Huttonsville State Prison 92 days after sentencing after spending time in Raleigh County jail and a brief stay at Huntington State Hospital.
Robert Vest twenty of Mabscott pleaded guilty in Raleigh County Criminal Court to delivering and possessing with intent to manufacture and deliver mescaline. Vest was arrested with six others by Beckley police on February fourteenth during a two day drug sweep. Judgment set for May twelfth at 10 a m. He remains on bond pending.
