Washington columnist Dick West mocks the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife for its jargon duck days and goose days. He riffs that such terms could quantify ordinary life like door bang days and shopping circle days, suggesting bureaucratic language inflates everyday counts.
Washington reports the government canceled a $405.14 debt it claimed a wounded Korean War hero owed for not serving full reenlistment. Former Sgt. Alfred Emanuel Smith, a Falls Church machinist, was discharged after saying he could not read or write. Army officials had demanded repayment after he reenlisted in 1954 and later lost his rank. Assistant U.S. Attorney Rice announced the case was dropped.
John D Parsons 67 of Spencer died Thursday in a fire that destroyed his house trailer. Funeral services will be held in Charleston Saturday at Mountain Mission. Burial will be in Cunningham Memorial Park at St Albans.

The Air Force selected eight pilots from 55 volunteers at Edwards AFB California for space duty. The group, aged 32 to 36, includes Capt. Albert H. Crews Jr. and others from Alexandria Seattle Chicago Washington Fargo Houston and Wilbraham. All are Air Force officers except Lt Cmdr Lloyd N Hoover. They will start an advanced astronautics course in June.
Mullens West Virginia disaster struck the Wyoming Bridle and Saddle Club when a Thursday night blaze destroyed 15 stalls causing about 4000 dollars in damages and halting area telephone service for two hours. Dr Ward Wylie owner reported no stall insurance and uncertain if the Mul lens Horse Show can be held this summer while bystanders saved 20 horses from the flames.
Ex-general Raoul Salan, head of the outlawed Secret Army Organization, was seized in Algiers near the university and flown to France for trial. His aide Ferrandi was arrested with him as French authorities vow to crush the OAS with a 40,000 man force. OAS gunmen carried out attacks in Algiers and Oran, with police authorizing force on OAS commandos and shootings on sight starting Monday.
Maj. Arch E. Roberts, former aide to Maj. Gen. Edwin A. Walker, was suspended from duty after delivering a DAR speech charging Los Angeles Mayor Sam Yorty with Communist ties. Roberts kept to his remarks, saying he would not back down, while the Army said it had not assigned anyone to attend the DAR event and learned of the remarks from press reports. Mayor Yorty denied the accusation as a loose charge that aided subversives.

James Uncle Jim Jarrell a Raleigh County native who lived to 105 died after a three week illness in Alberta Canada. Survived by a nephew and a niece he spent a life of travel and work including Civil War era memories and cattle ranching in Colorado before returning to West Virginia.

In a skirmish about 150 miles southwest of Saigon twenty eight Viet Cong fighters and six South Vietnamese government men died. Hoang Minh Cong provincial police chief in Ba Xuyen Province was among the casualties. Cong and his escort were ambushed while distributing village identification tags after learning rebels blocked a second village.
In heavy rain, three boys Roy L. Thompson 15 Dennis James Thompson 11 and David E. Vetula 10 of Holloway were struck and killed when an automobile driven by Wilbur Fritter 38 swerved to avoid a truck that had stopped to pick them up. The crash occurred between Holloway and Piedmont about 15 miles west of St. Clairsville.
Washington UPI reports a congressional furor over the cost to the United States to supply Emperor Haile Selassie with the WWII seaplane tender Orea turned patrol ship. The State Department cited 175000 dollars for the job, while testimony later claimed 3 million including 500000 for Norwegian crew training. Representative Rutherford vows to seek clarity on the disputed figures.
Russian cosmonaut Gherman Titov plans to visit the United States as a Soviet delegate for the International Space Conference in Washington April 30 to May 9. Veteran Beckley newsman C. J. Needy McQuade was sworn in by Federal Judge John A. Field Jr. in Charleston as the new U S marshal for the southern district of West Virginia. McQuade, 56, resigning as editor of the Raleigh Register, will begin duties May 1. predecessor John Ward attended, as did chief deputy J. Robert Miller. McQuade, a World War II military policeman with service in Africa and Italy, vowed to pursue the job with focus while expressing reluctance at leaving journalism. The Beckley Register announced John Charles Hodel as the new editor for the paper.
