Third Man Pleads To Attempted Rape In Raleigh County

A 26 year old Sprague man David Lee Johnson pleaded guilty to attempted rape in Raleigh County Criminal Court. He and 23 year old Walter St. Clair await sentencing after another man James Bika earlier received a sentence of one to five years plus a five year term for a previous felony. Police say the trio forced the boyfriend from their car on the C and O Dam Road July 7 1968 and assaulted the girl at a quarry on Grandview Road. Johnson and St. Clair remain on bonds.

Police report several arrests and accidents in Beckley and surrounding areas. Cited drivers faced reckless driving and red light violations, while a fire call injured workers. One collision left two injured and another fatality occurred when a vehicle ran under a truck.

A crest on the Moose River headed toward Minot North Carolina as 12 000 residents were driven from their homes by floods. Engineers prepared to open a dam built in 1939 to release three feet of water through White Rock South Carolina. The town’s 67 residents prepared to leave. The Mississippi River rose toward a three day crest at St Paul Minnesota with hundreds evacuated. Gov Warren Knowles declared an emergency in 13 western Wisconsin counties as the river above flood stage at Prairie du Chien.
