Six Die In State Fires In West Virginia Weekend
Six people died in Western Virginia fires over the weekend. Victims include a Webster County woman and her two grandchildren in Bergeo, an elderly Braxton County woman, and two children burned in incidents at Williamson and Charlestown. Dottie Jo Purkey, 7, died from burns suffered March 27 when a sparkler ignited her clothing in Williamson. A Braxton County farm home fire claimed another elderly woman, and a Charlestown girl died from burns three weeks earlier when her clothes caught fire from an open stove. In Webster Springs, Bessie Hamrick, 65, and her grandsons Arnold Lloyd Jr., 2, and William Lloyd, 4, perished as flames consumed the Arnold Lloyd residence. Lloyd and his son David, 14, were hospitalized with burns, while Mrs. Hamrick's daughter, who had jumped from a window, suffered minor injuries. A Braxton County blaze near Frametown killed Ella Cash, 8, as neighbors arrived after 1 p.m. to find the living room door kicked in.

Baby elephant born at Portland Zoo draws crowds
Portland’s Portland Zoo welcomed a newborn elephant weighing 225 pounds as visitors crowded the exhibit. The three-ton mother Belle watched proudly while the calf nursed about every 40 minutes and explored its world with a tiny trunk. Zoo director Jack Marks briefly collapsed from strain after the Saturday birth. Morgan Berry of Seattle, who raised Belle, aided with the calf as Belle may nurse for over a year.
