Folk Festival Program Begins To Take Shape
Mountain State Folk Festival plans took definite shape after Dr. Patrick W. Gainer outlined a two day schedule for July 8 9. He met with the steering committee at the Chamber of Commerce to review activities and policy and emphasized authentic folk culture over hillbilly acts. The program includes a possible fiddlers contest a variety show hosted by Dr. Gainer and a parade with pioneer life floats. Distinctive events like square dancing a tall tales contest a shaped note singing school a spelling bee and contests in horseshoes and wood chopping are under consideration with displays of spinning weaving basket making and other 1800s farm life arts. The festival aims for low costs and non commercial emphasis inviting craftspeople to sell their wares. A queen or princess representing tradition will head the belles list. A planning meeting is set for April 18 at the Chamber offices with key officials in attendance.
