Profit Taking is Counteracted by Broad Rally in Stocks
A scattered rally in rails, coppers, motors, steels, and specialties more than counteracted profit taking after the holiday. The Associated Press average of 60 stocks rose 0.4 to 64.7 for a fresh index peak since July 1931. Trading total 798,280 shares. Santa Fe set a new high, up about 2 percent. Major gainers included American Car & Foundry, U S Steel, Chrysler, General Motors, Calumet & Hecla, Anaconda, Kennecott, Westinghouse, Case, Union Pacific, Delaware & Hudson, and New York Central with varied small advances. Columbian Carbon rose amid light turnover. Decliners included American Telephone, Consolidated Edison, Standard Oil of New Jersey, Sears Roebuck, and National Distillers. Wheat rose 1 to 1 1/4 cents, corn firmer, bonds steady, and foreign currencies weaker against the dollar.
