Mrs Manning J Harvey of Philadelphia, mother of the missing Thresher skipper, says she has great faith in God and in her son. She recalls his Navy service, family details, and the hope that the submarine crew may be found. She notes her husband’s retirement and past work at Sears Roebuck Co.
Adm. George W. Anderson announced the Thresher test dive disaster is confirmed with 129 men lost. A second oil slick and interior-material fragments were found east of Cape Cod. Salvage efforts are unlikely to recover the submarine or bodies.

A high powered rifle bullet shattered a window in Dallas on Wednesday night narrowly missing former Maj. Gen. Edwin A. Walker as he sat at a desk filling out his income tax. The bullet left a one inch hole in the wall and splinters struck his arm. Walker, uninjured but shaken, joked I want a Purple Heart as he grabbed a pistol and began a search for the would be assailant.
Cuban exile community in Miami backs Revolutionary Council President Dr Jose Miro Cardona after his resignation bid over U S policy toward Cuba. The council rejects the move and vows to keep up the fight to topple Fidel Castro regardless of U S stance.

County and state authorities served civil rights leader Martin Luther King a temporary injunction to halt racial demonstrations in Birmingham. The order, signed by Circuit Judge William A. Jenkins Jr., bars King and over 140 others from mass parades, marches, sit-ins, or activities likely to cause a breach of the peace, following complaints by Police Commissioner Eugene Connor and Police Chief Jamie Moore.
Councilman John W Smith reports favorable chances for government aid to cover the $10 850 shortfall in completing Beckleys New City Hall The council heard a report from Recorder Walter Humphrey and designer Collis Amon after their Philadelphia trip The Housing and Home Finance Agency Facilities Administration revisions reduced the project cost from 246 539 to about 235 000 Wipperman Construction Co was approved as low bidder for the contract. Edgar W. Mayhew a Hancock County deputy sheriff was arraigned on embezzlement charges involving 53797 in county tax funds. Circuit Judge James B. McClure set next Tuesday for a plea. Mayhew, longtime tax deputy since 1933, was arrested April 2 on a warrant. thefts date to 1941 per Prosecutor Floyd Tarr.
Nick Romsky 65, former Charleston area restaurant owner, died after jumping from a fire escape at the state Odd Fellows Home in Elkins. Coroner Charles Leonard said the Bulgarian native sustained a broken neck and skull fracture from a 30 foot fall. He had been under psychiatric treatment in Charleston for despondency from divorce and business problems prior to the incident.
A U S Army captain was traced to Saigon as the sender of a bomb mailed to his wife. The San Francisco airport post office blast on March 18 injured two workers, shattered windows, and set mail stacks on fire as investigators prepared to bring him back from Vietnam for psychiatric evaluation.
In Groton Connecticut two Shafer brothers, Benjamin 35 and John 33, were crew members and electricians on the submerged nuclear submarine Thresher which vanished. Both men were married with four children each, making the loss a double ace for Mr. and Mrs. Neil D. Shafer.
A small Randolph County inn named Faraway Hills attracted visitors from 43 states and 11 foreign countries during its seven month year. Managers J McManus and wife run a guest house with six rooms and gracious dining. MIT expert Shannon Powell of the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering states the nuclear power plant aboard the submarine Thresher would not contaminate Atlantic waters or threaten shipping at its depth of 8,000 feet. He notes atomic waste has been dumped in the ocean for years.
Among men aboard the atomic submarine USS Thresher is Napoleon T. Garcia a steward first class of 4242 Fourth St NE Washington DC. His wife is Charlotte Lee Beckley. No relatives could be contacted. A Raleigh Countian was killed earlier in a Virginia disaster. William Thomas Crute 19 of Helen was among 33 aboard U 9 lost June 16 1941 off Portsmouth New Hampshire.
NEW LONDON CONN. U P D Lt Cmdr John W Harvey skipper of the missing nuclear submarine Thresher had his first command less than three months ago. He took command on Jan 18 after 12 years in the submarine service including Nautilus polar cruises. He is a former Sea Dragon XO during the first polar rendezvous with Skate. Harvey, born Sept 4 1927 in the Bronx, attended UPenn two years before entering the Naval Academy in 1960. He played varsity football at the academy for three years and graduated in June 1950 before joining the Sea Robin and later the nuclear program.
Two enlisted men and one officer were scheduled to sail on the U S nuclear submarine Thresher but missed the voyage. Identified by the Navy as Lt. Raymond A McCool of Dover New Hampshire Frank Joseph DeStefano Jr of Hartford Connecticut and Ray Mattson of Kittery Maine. DeStefano's wife said she was glad her husband was not aboard and that the Navy told her to say nothing more.
Navy marks 63rd anniversary of the submarine service as search for the nuclear Thresher continued. On April 11, 1900 the first submarine Holland entered U.S. Navy service.

He calls the levy critical for jobs and attracting industry. Raleigh County's 400000 share of the funds will be voted on Monday as levy supporters push high turnout.
