Storm Closes Mine Damage Is Minor In Beckley Area
A heavy storm hit Beckley and surrounding areas with 40 mph winds and hail, causing minimal damage. Reports noted a 14 inch 24 hour rainfall ending early today, a mine temporarily shut by wind, a conveyor shed destroyed near Logan, downed trees, and no serious injuries. A nearby lightning strike near Huntington caused a stenographer to be stunned. Meteorologist Leroy Stone linked the storm to the main blow reaching Huntington around 4 am.

Charleston Man Killed In Automobile Accident
One Charleston man was killed and another seriously injured in a late night crash in Kana wha Estates. George Stone of Charleston was pronounced dead at a Charleston hospital. Robert Bonham, 31, of Charleston, remained in critical condition. A passing motorist James Long, 32, of Montgomery, helped move Stone and Bonham after the initial crash. Long’s car overturned when he swerved to avoid another vehicle.

Man Staggers Before Wrong Bar and Is Jailed

Dallas Covey a 37 year old student pilot from East Beckley crashed a Piper Vagabond Cub at Beckley Mt Hope Airport shortly after 11 am during a practice takeoff. He gained 200 to 300 feet then stalled and crashed into junk about 1000 feet from the north south runway. He suffered minor bumps and bruises and did not require hospitalization. The plane, owned by Dale Fletcher of Harper Road, is a total loss.
