Court keeps wiretap limits on executive power
The Sixth Circuit upheld a lower court ruling that the president cannot bypass courts to order wiretaps on domestic groups. The court said Fourth Amendment restrictions apply to wiretaps in cases like Lawrence Plamondon, a White Panther suspect in a 1968 Ann Arbor CIA offices bombing. The decision may prompt a Supreme Court appeal, as other circuits have sided with the government on similar issues. The ruling did not force immediate disclosure of the conversations.
