Police uncovered a well organized syndicate linking gamblers loan sharks and political clubs that victimized at least 500 women. Runners lured targets to poker and bridge games with $20 chip stocks while loan sharks advanced funds and coerced debtors toward prostitution to settle debts.
The Harbin Manchoukuo correspondent reported a Japanese lieutenant killed in a clash with Russian forces near Suifenho. Five Japanese soldiers were listed missing after the skirmish. A small patrol expanded into a fight as 14 Russian soldiers engaged them. Both sides opened fire around the same time.
Rome dispatch reports Emperor Haile Selassie shaved his beard to disguise himself from Azebo and Galla fighters. The defeat in a recent battle prompted political repercussions among tribesmen in occupied territory, according to Stefani.

Four suspects were jailed in Pensacola as investigators alleged a plot to wreck a Louisville and Nashville passenger train and kill its engineer R. W. Vann a 70 year old man whose wife was among the detainees Vann defended his wife stating her innocence Sheriff Gandy cited sworn statements from two Black individuals claiming Mrs Vann plotted the death to collect a 3000 life insurance and to marry a younger man The plan targeted a curve near Pensacola where inner rail spikes had been removed but the outer rail remained intact leaving the train upright with 25 passengers and eight crew members aboard
Fayette county grand jury returned 62 indictments over two days, 50 felonies and 12 misdemeanors. The list includes charges of murder, rape, wounding, theft, arson, dynamiting, and related acts against individuals named Charles Banner, John Spraggin, Noel Fox, Frank Clark, Emory O Kincaid, James Reed, and others alongside the deaths of George Redman and Ed Grose.
President Roosevelt travels by train through flooded central Georgia toward Washington after a two week southern fishing cruise. He stops at Warm Springs to receive firsthand relief updates from officials on flood and storm rehabilitation efforts, with $2 500 000 allotted for the work.
Ella Williams of Cherry Creek Glade was jailed for nonpayment of a 7.50 fine and costs after being found guilty of violating school laws for not allowing her son Lloyd Williams to attend school. Henry Rose, 26, of Webster Springs, famed for a 17 inch chestnut leg cut in 1 minute 30 seconds to win a state championship, arrived at Camp Raleigh in Shady Spring and was enrolled as a local experience man. He previously appeared at the state forestry festival in Elkins in October.
April 9 in the District of Columbia Court of Appeals saw Attorney General Cummings clash with seven utility companies’ counsel John C Higgins over the holding company act. Cummings sought an injunction to bar challenges to the act pending a securities commission suit in New York against the electric bond and share system. He accused the utilities of a coordinated effort to flood courts while Higgins charged government overreach. A ruling was not expected for weeks and no penalties would be enforced until the Supreme Court rules. The act aims to federalize regulation of utilities and eliminate unnecessary holding companies by 1938.
The joint conference of anthracite operators and United Mine Workers ends its seventh week of wage talks and recesses until April 14. Debates cover wage direction, unauthorized mining by unemployed workers, rehiring exams, equal division of working time, and contract mining under a 30 day extension.

Morgantown on April 9 Mrs Jes sie Lappe aged 32 died today from a bullet wound. Police held her husband as Prosecuting Attorney John B. Saunders said she was shot early Saturday after a quarrel over whether she would get up to serve breakfast for visiting friends. Saunders said he would investigate further.
In Morgantown on April 9 an explosion at Cheat Canyon Coal Company's mine killed one miner and critically injured another while 130 men worked. Officials said a dynamite cap exploded prematurely during drilling. Fellow workers carried out Paul Prinkey, 21, and rushed Dewayne Whitkey, 21, to a hospital.
Uniontown Pa April 9 workers ignited the wrecked hulk of the luxury airliner Sun Racer after stripping it for investigators seeking the crash cause that killed 11. The fire broke out after Tuesday disaster burned part of the nine ton Pittsburgh bound T W A liner which tore through 200 yards of underbrush off course. Commerce department investigators prepared a hearing with mountain folk expected to testify while Pittsburgh slated testimony on radio beam and technical aspects. P G Richter Jr vice president of T W A said flight checks showed the beam functioned properly.
Funeral services for Thelma Williams age 25 will be held Friday at 1 p.m. in the North Sand Branch home of Irvin Thompson with Rev. Grant Stevens presiding. Burial follows under Rose Funeral Home direction in Sand Branch cemetery. She died of tuberculosis yesterday at her parents’ home in Sweenysburg. Survived by Luther and Mrs. Williams and siblings Henry Perry Thomas Zettie Lilly Gladys Edgar.

Chauncey S. Boucher president of West Virginia University nominated Frank Shine of Maidsville and Felix Espanola of Puerto Rico for appointment to the U S Marine Corps. Both are seniors and captains in the university ROTC based on high scholastic rating and physical ability.
Glen Shumate, a singer, won last night's final in the Beckley Lions Club amateur night series at the Lyric theater. The seven prior winners, including Jean Monica, Marvin Leffen, the Raies Sisters, the Porterfield Sisters, the Four Also-Rans, June Eve Kyle, and Glen Rogers, will compete tonight to earn a trip to Bluefield. There, the winner will vie with regional amateurs for a chance to appear on Fred Allen's Town Hall Tonight program in New York.
France pressed the Rhineland issue in the Geneva talks on the Italian Ethiopian conflict and Locarno crisis. Britain, Eden, and Spanish conciliation chief de Madariga urged Italy and Ethiopia to negotiate under League auspices. Ethiopia signaled willingness to talks within the Covenant. The League shifted atrocity charges to a three member sub committee. Eden hinted Britain might back stronger sanctions if conciliation failed while France proposed a collective security plan with an international league army, drawing fire at home and abroad.
James Mahan, about 65, died at Shady Spring yesterday where he had lived alone in a two room house near the post office. The crippled miner, who lost both legs in a mining accident, was found by Curtis Simmons, a local youth who cared for him. Sheriff C C Lewis said Mahan bought the land from savings on state compensation checks. He had used crude artificial limbs he whittled himself.
