Clerk's Office Extends Registration Hours in Raleigh County
Raleigh County Clerk's office will stay open today and Thursday from 6 30 to 8 30 p m to assist voters registering for the May 10 primary. Deadline to register is Saturday noon when the courthouse closes. Regular hours are 8 30 to noon and 1 to 4 30 p m with Saturday 8 30 to noon.

A 17-year-old Stotesbury youth, Elgie Lee Mathews, stands trial in Criminal Court for allegedly stealing 1,500 feet of copper trolley wire valued at $2,000 from Winding Gulf Coal Inc at Tommy's Creek. Co-defendant Thomas Dewey Treadway is also indicted and testified for the defense. jury includes alternates and witnesses sworn for both sides. Texas Driver Charged After Auto Accident
A two car collision on Beaver Avenue near Johnstown Road at 12 05 a m led to a drunk driving charge for Willie G Robinson of Antonio Texas. His 1962 model car struck a 1966 model vehicle driven by Clay W Walker of Beckley causing about 500 in damages. Robinson was booked at Raleigh County Jail at 930 a m and released at 1 a m after posting 110 cash bond to appear in City Municipal Court. Other items note Ronnie Sutton of Eccles released on bond for weapon charges, Earl Whitlock of Beckley jailed then released on bond for license and concealed weapon charges, and several other local or out of state individuals cited or released on various charges. A separate two car crash on Prince Street caused 200 in damage with no arrests.

The Raleigh County Board of Education tentatively approved a 6.948 million dollar budget, the largest yet, with final approval due April 18. Net levy requires 1.898 million dollars to be raised without raising current tax rates, amid added federal program costs and Social Security contributions.
