In Hong Kong 13 yachtsmen were released from 46 days of captivity by Communist China. Among the freed were Carol Zinky and Joan von Sydow. Simeon Baldwin and Bessie Donald remain in custody for further interrogation. The group included a Briton, an Australian, a Frenchman, four Hong Kong Chinese and two sailors linked to Swedish citizenship claims. The captives described generally humane treatment and said one American passport incident worsened Baldwin’s situation.

Heart Transplant Patient Richard Newell Dies in California
Richard Charles Newell, Southern California's first heart transplant patient, died in Torrance of pneumonia at 38. He had undergone an eight hour operation six weeks earlier at Harbor General Hospital, receiving a heart from a 23 year old mother. The donor's husband authorized the transplant after the donor's death by self-inflicted action.
