On board President Wilsons special train at Hornbrook California he shook hands with townspeople and schoolchildren. The train later stopped at Shasta Springs where the President and Mrs Wilson walked without heavy security. They visited Robert Small injured in an automobile crash and wished him a quick recovery as Dr Grayson said he would be fine in days.
President Wilson signed an act of Congress incorporating the American Legion, a veterans group, with the central empire reporting from California on September 16. The legion aims to unite former service members and support veterans' interests nationally.
Washington September 17 opposition from several members led House leaders to drop the plan to present a $100,000 sword to General Pershing. Washington Sept 17 The principal Senate amendment liberalizing the prohibition enforcement bill to permit home manufacture for individual consumption of non intoxicating cider and light wines was accepted by the House conferees and placed in the bill subject to the conference report. The conferees also added a provision allowing transport of non intoxicating ciders and wines for conversion into vinegar.
Pittsburgh Sept 17 support for delaying the steel workers strike until after the Washington conference on October 6 met firm opposition at the national committee for organizing iron and steel workers meeting. Amalgamated Association backs the strike while fears of walkouts and anti federation currents are noted. Gompers favors postponing the strike and will be represented at the meeting.
