Washington Sept. 12 By direction of the President a court of inquiry is appointed to examine into the nature of transactions of Gen. a the Chief of the Ordnance regarding Genoa and congressional ordnance reports. Capt. Watton is ordered to Detroit to report to Gen. Cram for orders. Currency movements and notes totals are given, with a bank issue of $98,850 and weekly total of $124,715 in National Bank currency. The Tennessee committee had another interview with the President, lasting about ten minutes, with a hopeful reply from the War Department expected. The longitude difference between Washington and Havant is shown as 5 degrees 21 minutes and 8 1-5 seconds, with electricity taking 35 1-10 seconds to traverse the cable.
A Northwestern Railway freight train derailed by fire near Fort and Wood Creek, damaging track and washing out culverts. About 150 passengers aboard were rescued by boat to Comstock station. repairs and track restoration expected. Estimated damage around 15000 dollars with no confirmed fatalities.
The Carthage Gazette reports the death of Robert Lincoln, a second cousin of President Lincoln, from lung hemorrhage in his room at the Hancock House. Born in Hardin County Kentucky in 1813, he was among the county’s oldest settlers and had immigrated in 1832. His funeral services were held at the Catholic church and he was laid to rest in the family burying ground in Green County, with a Masonic delegation escorting the procession.
Cleveland mourns after a respected young lady is attacked by a black burglar who is arrested soon after. Authorities shield the suspect from the crowd as the city awaits trial. In nearby Independence, Joseph Skitmer is killed by burglars in his own home.
Hon Peter Melendy president and Dr Sprague treasurer of the Iowa State Agricultural Society are in Clinton to arrange the State Fair opening September 29. Secretary Shaffer will arrive tomorrow to receive entries. Officials expect a record exhibition and the largest attendance.
Between two and three hundred Knights Templar from Baltimore Washington Philadelphia Louisville Nashville New York New Hampshire and New Jersey arrived here to be quartered at local hotels. Delegations arrive tomorrow. Regular exercises begin at Masonic Temple tomorrow morning.
The Mechanical Institute Industrial Fair in San Francisco ends after an 81 day run. Total receipts reach 1,000 exclusive of four days set aside for charity. Funds donated to various institutions while attendees enjoyed concerts and overland test nights at the hotel scene.
