Official Paris report describes the French operation on the Aisne ridge from October 23 establishing a key high ground near Malmaison. German fortifications, tunnels, and batteries met stiff French fire as troops captured objectives and took prisoners and guns despite bad weather.
Washington dispatches report Zeppelins 1-49 and L-50 shot down by French forces after raiding England. Prisoners claim they were unaware of American expeditionary landings in France, surprising Allied crews and officials.
In a Washington briefing Hoover urges farmers to boost hog production to ease allied shortages and reduce shipping needs. He cites pork as vitally needed, notes high prices and a planned price floor, and warns that a large wheat surplus must be used to aid allies while domestic economy improves hog output.
Ewald Pietsch, son of University of Chicago professor Dr Karl Pietsch, was arrested in Chicago on charges of threatening President Wilson and desecrating the American flag. Commissioner Foote set bail at $10,000 and adjourned the case to November 3.
An American steamer escaped a German U boat after a four hour fight in which seven crew were wounded. An American torpedo boat rescued the disabled ship and an American destroyer depth charged the submarine, which submerged before the escort reached range.
President Wilson endorses woman suffrage as an immediate state issue addressing a delegation from New York’s suffrage party at the White House. He urges states to act now, saying the war quickens the need to consider woman suffrage and supports action by states rather than a national amendment. The New York group plans to use his backing ahead of the November 6 elections.
The food administration relaxed the embargo on syrup gum and ice cream producers. Refiners and distributors now may deliver sugar up to 50 percent of each firm’s normal requirements, based on existing stock.
Boston October 26 Secretary Baker warns that neglecting safe surroundings for troops near war camps could lower national morals and spread social ills. He urges a $200,000 New England drive as part of a $700,000 regional fund and stresses protecting soldiers from corrupting environments.
New York officials say potatoes will drop to three cents a pound Friday as 800 car loads flood the market. The move aims to aid consumers, with retailers earning about $1.50 per barrel in profit amid the price reduction.
The general council of the Evangelical Lutheran church approved merging the General Council the Federal Synod and the United Synod of the South into one body to be called the United Lutheran Church in America. About 3,600 clergy and 900,000 communicants would unite under a constitution accepting three ecumenical creeds and the Augsburg Confession.
Alvin C. Carlson of Galesburg waived examination on manslaughter charges after a Burlington Railroad freight train collided with a stock train at Earlville. Carlson, the engineer, reportedly admitted he was asleep at the throttle as seven stockmen were killed. Bonds were posted at 5000 dollars.
Washington October 26 The President weighs limiting production of non essential war materials. Two options are debated The War Industries Board would seek voluntary cuts by specific manufacturers or a general patriotic request to all firms to curb output.
Washington report says Liberty Loan totals topped 3 billion with a strong path to 5 billion as drives continue. Secretary McAdoo calls victory in sight while Treasury notes official returns and district estimates total 2.025 billion and 3.2 billion respectively.
Horace King, a Negro physician, was found insane by a circuit court jury for the murders tied to the East St. Louis race riots and ordered to the state insane asylum at Anna. He may be brought back for trial if sanity returns. Simultaneously Calvin Beener faced trial for allegedly burning his home during the riots.
Illinois farmers show strong support for the liberty loan with large subscriptions from the State Bank of Chicago Illinois Steel Company and Corn Exchange National Bank totaling 4 5 million. Yet organizers say overall results lag expectations while Rock Island Mercer Logan and Menard counties report strong local rounds and surpass quotas.
Joliet Illinois October 26 In a dramatic home bank raid two robbers bound and gagged John Frazee cashier of the State Bank of Monee and fired at clerk John Peters who then frightened the men away. Frazee pressed a secret push button and alerted aid from a nearby store owned by Frazee’s father saving thousands in the vault. Robbers fled with a $200 bag and were later captured after a chase. Suspects named as Robert Jones 18 of Peoria and Frank Darry 42 of Chicago. Darry bore a bullet wound in the left leg.
