Michigan Court closes term after 52 days and steamboat fires
From the Chicago Press comes news that the U S Court for Michigan ended a fifty two day term with two grand juries empaneled. One jury found nine counterfeit coin bills and timber theft, the other found mail robbery and timber theft indictments. Writs issued numbered 120. Admiralty trials totaled fifteen. Also reported are fires destroying the Montauk Campbell and Lunette at St Louis, with the Lunette carrying heavy freight toward St Paul and insured for twenty six thousand dollars.

Fire destroys barn and outbuildings at Prof Turner’s farm
A large barn and adjoining plant, sheds, and much property at Prof J B Turner of Jacksonville burned last Tuesday night. Three horses, twenty nine hogs, and extensive gear, implements, and carriages were lost. Dwelling spared by rain, origin suspected arson though Turner was away. Estimated loss about three thousand dollars, partly insured.

From Oregon a letter dated August 11 reports a warm but pleasant summer in a genial climate. It notes abundant crops wheat oats and hay with thrashers busy. Prices listed include wheat at 150 per bushel potatoes 1 flour 5 per 100 pounds oats 1 star labor 2 to 3 per day butter 50c cheese 40c chickens 9 per dozen. Emigrants arriving bring good grass and health noted amid high water on the route and scarce cattle and horses in Oregon.

Railroad Disaster Near Lincoln Kills Two Firemen
The C. M. R. R. wreck occurred one mile south of Lincoln as cars came from the north. The locomotive and baggage cars left the line. The first fireman died instantly. the second died within a half hour. The engineer Z Bramwell sustained a broken arm and other injuries. Passengers were not harmed and continued their journey. The Georgetown steamer later sank at Grand Tower with extensive cargo, though some freight was salvaged. Insurance details are unclear.

Balloon Tragedy In France Ends In Fatal Fall
A Mont-de Marsan balloon ascent on the 20th carried Emma Verdier, 21, daughter of a gardener, aloft in calm weather. The next day she fell headfirst near Montesquion, the basket breaking, the anchor catching a tree, and she died instantly. The balloon drifted away as villagers found her body and the rope anchor still attached to the oak.
