British and French advances across occupied Belgium and northern France push toward Ghent and La Fere while German forces retreat from Ostend to Lille. Reports describe shifting front lines, depleted German ammunition, and morale concerns as Allied troops seize towns including Thielt and brace for continued opposition along the Lille to Sedan corridor.
The Czecho-Slovak national council formally declared independence in Washington on Oct 19, later recognized by the United States and allied powers. He was buried with military honors on the battlefield. Several Y M C A workers were reported slightly wounded while serving soldiers in the trenches including Henry Pinkerton of Jacksonville, Ill.
Paris Oct 18 French official communication reports further progress by French troops in the Oise region along the Aisne in Champagne and in Belgian Flanders. The update notes gains achieved across multiple fronts and underscores continued advances amid ongoing operations.
Chicago dispatch reports Liberty band subscriptions in the seventh federal reserve district surpass the combined quotas of five states. Indiana reached its quota becoming the third state to do so while Iowa and Wisconsin lag. Michigan and Illinois show mixed results with Illinois pulling extra due to plan subscriptions led by International Harvester, boosting Chicago to 221 million on a 352.3 million district quota.
