Ox causes spectacular Michigan Central crash near Battle Creek
On a rainy Friday afternoon at about two and a half miles east of Battle Creek an express passenger train struck an ox that leaped onto the track from a woods fence. The engine derailed and buried in mud but no one was seriously injured among six hundred passengers. T. W. S. Alexander of this city witnessed the scene and described a terrible but fortunate accident. The engineer and conductor were cleared of blame as no foresight could have prevented the incident.

Surplus in Treasury Could Fund Pacific Railroad
The surplus in the United States Treasury subject to draft on September 23 stood at 27,603,090 while June 30 showed 21,942,892. Debate centers on how to use this idle gold and silver, with options including lending par value stock, building forts or harbors, or funding the Pacific Railroad. The National Intelligencer suggests Treasury advances against stock at a low rate to save interest and keep funds available for contingencies, potentially reducing the premium on stock and stimulating circulation. A railroad accident on the Rock Island line near Peru and Tiskilwa killed the engineer and fatally wounded the fireman. A Texas paper jokes about Ex-President Lamar’s marriage, not death. Kentucky lawyer Martin M. Marshall, 77, dies. A Tennessee tragedy details John Hicks’s slain wife and wife-intervened attempt on her father’s life, with Hicks missing afterward.
