President Wilson replies to Germany’s peace note by a decisive move to test sincerity and justify endurance of the war if pretended. Berne October 9 German Emperor addressing troops in Alsace asserts French and American advances will fail. He vows to defend Alsace Lorraine with the last drop of blood, claiming divine protection and stewardship of the provinces for the inhabitants and God's glory.
London Oct 9 The British Palestine statement says Rayak is where the enemy broad gauge railway from the north joins the etro gauge system in Palestine. The latter system is entirely in our hands. A considerable quantity of rolling stock and ammunition was captured. The railway station and aerodrome were damaged by the retreating enemy. In the coastal area the enemy evacuated Beirut and retired northward.
Chicago reports a strong fourth Liberty loan push with $18 million in a single day and $103 million citywide. Col Roosevelt and Czech leader Masaryk spoke in support, pledging that Germany’s peace talk means total funding and victory over its military machine.
Senator Lodge of Massachusetts and Representative Fess of Ohio voiced disappointment as President Wilson sent a note of inquiry to Germany. Lodge urged no talks until terms are imposed, while Fess warned the move could prolong the war and undermine hard-won gains.
