Lucey argues the nation should consent to suits, that the action seeks to enforce a criminal statute, and that railroads have legal remedies. In Pittsburgh on November 30 competition among hucksters lowering live turkey prices to five cents per pound triggered police reserves to curb eager buyers from pushing dealers into the Monongahela river. Other city areas saw live turkeys selling from 23 to 28 cents a pound.

Washington Nov 30 The Interstate Commerce Commission allowed railroads to set and maintain a new progressive demurrage scale until May 1 next to ease freight car shortages. The plan, higher than the old $1 daily rate, starts three days after filing, with two free days. charges rise to 1 2 3 5 dollars per day thereafter, retaining weather suspension and the average credit feature. Commissioner McChord said the measure aims to spur prompt unloading.
Under the Defense of the Realm Act the Board of Trade announces that from December 1 it will assume control of all coal mines in South Wales. The move follows a dispute over miners demands for a higher war bonus and failed attempts at a settlement due to mine owners' objections to investigations.
