Heavy shelling on the Ancre front reported as artillery battles intensify near Monastir. Reports emphasize ongoing bombardment and strategic operations with Allied and enemy positions tense along the sector.
British forces renew assault on both sides of the Ancre while the German war office says the attempt to break through failed amid heavy artillery activity. French attacks near Sailly Saillisel are reported as repulsed by German fire. In the Balkans, German troops advance in western Wallachia and gains are claimed in the Alt and Jiul valleys as Serbs and French push toward Monastir. A Zeppelin is brought down by Russian troops near Sarny and the crew captured.
Des Moines reports wealthy South Dakota farmer John I Swanson swindled $40,000 in a fake horse race on November 8. Telegraph instruments were used in a hotel room to appear as racing wire. Police suspect a gang tied to Davenport misdeeds totaling over $100,000.
Chicago, Nov. 19. The body of nine year old Cyril Sonny Matthews, missing from his home nine months, washed ashore on Lake Michigan. Barnett Matthews identified the body by clothing and teeth after a lengthy search by parents and detectives.
Wm Jennings Bryan told National Women’s Christian Temperance Union delegates in Indianapolis to push rivalry between Democrats and Republicans for prohibition. He urged support for a constitutional prohibition amendment and said Democratic women had shown responsibility to liquor interests after the recent election. He urged letters to senators and congressmen in favor of prohibition.
Washington reports the Navy will use 26,030,000 provided by Congress to outfit Philadelphia Norfolk and Bremerton yards for ship construction. Philadelphia yards receive the bulk. Awards for fourteen destroyers were announced. contracts for four battleships and two destroyers remain pending, with bids on four battle cruisers due December 6.
November 19 report from New London says the German submarine Deutschland, after colliding with tug T. A. Scott, Jr, remained in port pending U S authorities inquiry into the loss of the convoy and five crew members. Repairs appear minor, but legal actions may follow. The disaster is blamed on Captain John Gurney's navigation, and insurance firms plan libel actions to protect claims and families.
British and Canadian troops won a snow storm battle along both banks of the Ancre River. They advanced easterly and northerly, took about 500 prisoners, and established a new line near Grand Court Petit Miramont and Pys, with German resistance largely broken by preparatory bombardment.

Brown is not seriously hurt Fitzgerald has slight chance to recover porter William Dawson is detained. he says the fight began when Brown was removed from the train.
Complete returns from 59 Illinois counties show 206,641 votes in favor and 88,856 against the tax amendment. Outside Cook, the total vote favors the amendment by more than a two to one margin.
Chicago on November 19 reports price hikes in affordable restaurants with five cent sandwiches now ten cents and a candy maker announcing ice cream sodas will cost fifteen cents henceforth.

The letter invites a visit or a committee talks, urging a prompt reply and promising cooperation to provide information on Quincy’s attractions.
Karl Jackson an 18 year old Burlington railroad employee was arrested after admitting he raised a payroll check from 1.13 to 21.13 and passed it at the A. J. Nolan saloon last night. He said another worker advised him and Nolan flagged the discrepancy when checking the register. He was taken into custody at the railroad station.
Dr F M Boyd of the State Board of Health arrived to lead measures against typhus scare. Four cases and one death reported. Patients isolated and surrounding areas in Ft Madison and nearby Mexican colonies disinfected to halt spread.
President Wilson told a Baltimore labor delegation that America must erase class divisions and build justice with a heart. Samuel Gompers praised Wilson’s stance while Mother Jones greeted him, ending with calls for unity and shared humanity.
Max Laws, a Waterloo man and brakeman, was acquitted in Dubuque district court on a murder charge for stabbing fellow brakeman L. I. Thomas on July 24. Laws testified he acted in self defense after Thomas insulted Mrs. Laws and her four children. Mrs. Laws and their children attended the trial.
Peoria HL reports Captain Jack Son led Lombard to a 3 to 18 win over Bradley Institute Saturday. Lombard built a large lead early with two first quarter touchdowns and dominated the rest of the game with precise passes and runs. Bradley struggled to respond as Lombard both scored and prevented counters.
Warry Wagner of Cedar Rapids, a tobacco salesman, paid a 500 fine in Dubuque district court for failing to report he had run down a pedestrian. The accident happened Tuesday evening. the injured man died two days later. Wagner confessed guilt.
Members of Troop G First Illinois cavalry reached Peoria on Saturday after a four month duty on the Mexican border. They were greeted by a large crowd of relatives and friends.
New York says Wilbur W. Maren proposes banning individual political donations over 1000 to campaign funds. The Democratic treasurer aims to raise 3604100 to erase campaign deficits. He expects a new corrupt practices act before the next presidential election and argues no overall spending limit but caps on wealthy buyers of influence.
President Wilson and three Cabinet members conferred with the joint international commission on the Mexican border deadlock. Officials signaled that if border protection terms meet approval Gen Pershing’s troops in Mexico may withdraw. Lane said he was satisfied and would return to Atlantic City for Monday’s talks.

St Paul Minn November 19 Charles E Hughes is officially declared the winner of Minnesota’s twelve electoral votes with a 396 vote plurality over Wilson. Secretary of State Julius A Schmahl announced the totals as the canvassing board plans to meet next Tuesday. Kellogg led the U S Senate race in a runaway victory.
Gilbert Richardson, mayor of Batesville, Ark, was acquitted in circuit court after 14 hours of deliberation. As the verdict was read his one year old wife, the alleged motive, rushed into his arms and they wept. The couple left town together in an automobile. The defense claimed Padgett tried to hire Mrs Richardson and had threatened to kill Richardson to fulfill his plan. The shooting happened at a dance. Padgett, 38, Richardson, 37.
In St Joseph Missouri Oscar D McDaniel Buchanan county prosecuting attorney is tried on murder charges in the death of his wife Harriet Moss McDaniel. Doctors Weiser and Cox testified noting the blows were possibly left handed with details on the wound pattern and timeline. The court allowed relatives of the defendant to remain in court as witnesses and more evidence was expected.
Henry P. Davidson, J P Morgan partner, held a 45 minute conference with President Wilson at the White House on Saturday. He declined to discuss the subject of the visit. White House officials offered no comment.
