Governor John M Palmer issues a state proclamation calling all residents of Illinois to observe Thanksgiving on November 28 1872. He prays for mercies, peace, and charity to the poor, urging reverent thanks and nationwide observance.
The Hon. Shelby M. Callum of Sangamon appears as the best, timely candidate for Speaker of the State House. He brings prior Speaker experience in 1861 and three terms in Congress, with strong support expected from Republican members at the upcoming session.
A morning fire at Upchurch's tobacco store in Pana Illinois destroyed the shop and its contents and damaged several neighboring businesses including Orr Bros grocers R D Murray clothier A S Keeny jeweler Taylor Brothers books and music and Pat Smith barber shop Most valuables saved only two families belongings spared. Buildings suffered about 15000 in damage with insurance affected by the Boston fire. James Tennison baggage master fell through a skylight fracturing his skull and other injuries with life despaired. The blaze is attributed to an incendiary.
Loxpon reports a severe gale on the Prussian coast with Stralsund harbor vessels sunk, the town flooded, a warehouse fire spreading, and several lives lost. Prince Bismark ill in Brest rumors. Lubec warehouses submerged. Pelsall coal mine disaster in Staffordshire leaves 22 miners trapped with slim chances of rescue.
Waininctor, Nov. 14 Brig. Gen. Cooke, commanding the Department of the Lakes, is likely to retire soon due to being over 62 and having 45 years in the service. A claims decision awards 39000 in gold to Britain for property seized by Union forces during the war. Weather: Washington forecast predicts Friday winds from the northwest to Ohio valley and Michigan with occasional snow rain and clearing skies.
The report notes a Committee of Seventy pursuing a new city charter while retaining the minority representation clause from the prior year. Gossip items mention Wm. M. Evarts as a potential successor to Secretary Fish, Gen. Meigs succeeding Gen. Meade, and Judge Settle of North Carolina as Justice Nelson’s successor, with the latter’s retirement due to age. St. Louis reports Greeley a 23,640 majority from 112 counties for governor, and Woodson leads the 5th District by a small margin, altering the congressional balance to 4 Republicans and 9 Democrats. San Francisco shows Grant leading state totals by about 13,900 with 12,000 in one county cluster and Greeley about 600 in another. Coxcorp notes Grant with a 5,439 statewide majority.
New York reports say the present condition of horses follows crux treatment during a recent sickness. A new disease has appeared in every large stable in the city with numerous fatal cases. Tonepo notes fifty cases reported, while Wheeling West Virginia cites considerable spread in the past 24 hours.

The steamer St Marys, en route from Memphis to Cincinnati with 236 bales of cotton and 10 passengers, struck a stump near Moris Landing at 9:30 PM and sank in under ten minutes in 18 feet of water. No lives lost. Valued at 36,000, insured for 16,000. Likely salvageable. Also reports fire damages in Paris Illinois and Eckert raises the steamer Katie at Helena.

In New York on November 14 Commodore Vanderbilt announced his underground transit route will be largely open to sunlight or connected to upper light every twenty feet. The tunnel is to be completed by May 1874 and will feature six depots along the line.
