Paris dispatch reports German forces in waves with tanks machine guns and poison gas pressing a large offensive. Twenty five divisions join the drive as Franco British lines reel but retreat remains orderly and reserves rush to Vesle near Fismes to stem the advance.
Haig reports counterattacks north of Dickebusch lake restored line east of the area with several German divisions engaging. heavy losses inflicted and prisoners taken. Berlin says 15,000 prisoners captured as Crown Prince assault near Laon repelled. several towns and heights taken by storm and Vesle front reached. Paris notes French counterattacks halted German advance on Neuville Sur Margival Vregny and Vesle heights while Germans crossed the Vesle near Bazoches and Fismes.
Washington May 29 Congress leaders from both parties approve a plan to push war revenue legislation by mid June, then recess for August 1 while the Ways and Means Committee drafts the bill. The measure, likely four billion dollars, would tax incomes excess profits and luxuries.
Kankakee Illinois May 29 A troop train bearing drafted men to Georgia did not wait for all aboard and a man pulled the air cord stopping the train. Several jumped off and stoned the engineer in his cab. One man Joseph Burkhardt from draft board No 51 Chicago was found under the moving train losing both legs and likely not to recover. The train halted at Otto station four miles south and later proceeded to Champaign under guard. Sheriff Rothfuhr arrested three men placed in county jail. Burkhardt remained in a local hospital.
Senator Ham Lewis Democratic whip of the Senate visited Chicago from Washington on May 29 delivering a White House message praising Middle West patriotism. He said the new revenue bill won’t harm small startups nor heavily tax profitable firms and that railroad rate adjustments will aid properties and return to the people via government purchases.
American pilots Lieut. Edward V. Rickenbacher and Lieut. Douglas Campbell, in France, forced a German biplane out of control near the Toul sector after a six-plane engagement. Campbell also destroyed another enemy plane near Essey, within German lines. Monoplane pursuit later shot down a German biplane east of St. Michel in a brief two-minute duel. An empty sausage balloon drifted toward American headquarters in strong winds.
Washington May 29 A merger of Adams American Wells Fargo and Southern into a Federal Express company to be headed by George C Taylor will take effect July 1. The new private carrier will operate under contract with railroads to transfer 50 to 4 percent of gross revenues and aims to save millions through centralized operations. Over 100000 employees will be retained with wage increases pending railroad wage scales. Three smaller railroad owned firms may join later as the four leading carriers seek permanent, war era efficiency.
Washington reports American troops attacked in Picardy on a front of about 1 1/4 miles, captured Cantigny, taking 200 prisoners and inflicting severe losses on the enemy. Allied lines held and American casualties were small as counterattacks faltered.
Thomas J. Mooney was again sentenced to death in San Francisco for murder connected to the preparedness parade bombing of July 22, 1916. Judge Franklin A. Griffin ordered Mooney to San Quentin within ten days and to undergo a 60 to 90 day confinement. The case now rests with Governor William D. Stephens and President Wilson for clemency after persistent appeals since his February 1917 conviction.
German forces push along a twenty mile front between Vailly and Berry-Au-Bac claiming many towns captured and 15 000 Allied troops taken prisoner while British French defenders regroup and withdraw to Vesle. American forces seize Cantigny near Mont Didier and push to reclaim lost ground as Italians press Austrians along Piave Capo Sile area.
Associated Press report from May 27 describes Entente troops retreating under a German assault along the Champagne front from the Chemin des Dames to Courcy near Brigant. The attack involved about 25 divisions, including two guards divisions, preceded by a long bombardment with poison gas shells as the line was thinly held.
Allied and French forces withdrew from the Ailette valley and the knife like ridge to avoid heavy losses as German numbers pressed. Local reserves covered the retreat while reinforcements arrived. Craonne fell and the Chemin-Des-Dames line opened to flank attack as the French left held against German efforts toward Soissons. A wide bridgehead north of the Aisne remained menacing to the cuechy flank.
