The Jacksonville Journal reports a local man in Morgan county unaware of Gen McConnel s murder, raising questions about juror competence. In Georgia, H C Burchard of Freeport is nominated after a lengthy Republican convention for Congress to fill Washbourne s vacancy, with broad county competition and calls for party unity.
Crime news reports Mrs June Dixon shooting and killing her husband Bangs J Dixon in Rockford Illinois after leaving him months earlier following alleged brutal treatment. The husband had sought custody of their child and visited with a possible plan to take the baby. Dixon died from the wound. Mrs Dixon remains unconscious with motive linked to fear of losing the child. Also included is Kate Bishir actress charged with grand larceny over a watch and notes Scott Munson grain merchants absconding with 501000 in fraudulent transactions.
May 27 Ottawa reports resolutions to unite Prince Rupert's land with the Dominion of Canada and Hudson Bay Territory. The Canadian Government would safeguard Indian tribes. In Nova Scotia, Mr Murray urged restoring institutions or severing allegiance, condemning the union as disaster and urging free political choices. Monday set for consideration.
In Freeport the Republican Convention to fill E B Washburnes vacancy after a long session nominated H C Burchard of Stephenson county on the 353d ballot. The meeting continued from afternoon into night.
In Jacksonville Illinois on May 26 the McConnel murder trial opened with the jury impaneled. States Attorney Brown led the prosecution and W H Barnes represented the defense. The session focused on questioning Mary Ryan the servant who found Gen McCannel dead. no new facts were disclosed.

The Congregational Association of Illinois opened its Twenty fifth Annual Session in FairMington with Rev. William Carter of Pittsfield presiding and Rev. KR Pearson of Rala delivering opening sermons. A New York committee report on church union urged rapid consolidation and joint governance across denominations, while other items covered Scotch Irish relations and a gubernatorial endorsement in Rhode Island.
The mileage committees recommended full advance travel expenses for eligible delegates. Adopted. The Report on Reunion was submitted and discussed with Judge Strong Dr. Fisher and others urging adoption. The Assembly showed unanimous support, with Rev Dr Hardock Dr Sudderland and others speaking in favor.

Ridgely of Ridgely's Banking House, Hon. J. A. Chesnut of the Savings Bank, and Col. Williams of the First National Bank.

Wheat No.1 around 1.15 to 1.16 dollars, corn mixed, oats steady, pork and lard firm with moderate demand, and cotton tobacco and whiskey trading firm to dull.
