Secretary Daniels denied any American ships sunk and urged press restraint while noting rumors caused market fluctuations in grain cotton and stocks. A separate cable from Admiral Sims warned Germany still spies in the United States and stressed secrecy around naval operations and ship movements.

Nicholas and Augustus G Ladner. The New York sheriff attached money in a safe deposit box at the engineers’ request. The engineers claim the funds belong to them. the surety company argues they must prove ownership by the state of Yucatan.
Washington May 26 Counsel for shippers at Interstate Commerce Commission hearings on a 16 percent freight rate hike argued many western railroads could meet current conditions without higher tariffs. They aimed to prove economies could raise revenue. B L Winchell Union Pacific director of traffic said the line pays an extra two percent dividend annually and defended earnings as carefully conserved amid claims of lavish office spending.
Dispatch from Tokyo reports Japanese squadrons aiding in the south Pacific and the Mediterranean against German submarines. A Paris dispatch dated May 18 notes Japanese gunboats arrived at Marseilles to assist in submarine warfare and confirms Japanese light craft are in the Mediterranean.
The Berlin Vorwaerts informs in Copenhagen via London that no German after three years of war would accept Ribot’s terms. It calls for continuing the war for another three years rather than peace on those terms.
Washington May 26 The senate finance committee debated the nation s first year tax burden under warp with no final decision. Members favor reducing the House revenue measure from 1 8 billion to between 1 25 and 1 5 billion and consider several plans including cutting or replacing the five percent automobile tax. The panel appears set to largely adopt House income tax schedules with only retroactive changes.
In Hammond Indiana on May 26 a railroad motor car on the Elgin Joliet and Eastern railway left the rails near Hobart while rounding a curve. Fifteen men were injured and three men named John McManny Peter Motowin and Frank Lodoreo were fatally injured.
A violent tornado swept Sedgwick and Harvey counties near Wichita killing eighteen in Andale and nine near Sedgwick. The storm damaged small towns, with at least 15 bodies identified and rescue efforts continuing as a large path of destruction stretched from Andale to Newton. State Senator T. Danner and an accompanying boy Dewey Faw were among Newton fatalities.
In Kansas City Kansas on May 26 Secretary William G. McAdoo of the treasury department urged business leaders and bankers to subscribe to the liberty loan to fund American troops. He warned against fighting on paper and stressed arming the nation with modern rifles and artillery for a swift end to the war. He briefly noted submarines crossing the Atlantic, a remark left unexplained in both public and private talks.
Berlin dispatch says British forces stormed German trenches near Loos but were repelled by a counter attack. Fighting continues. British troops northwest of Bullecourt advanced but halted before German lines. Official German army statement.
Five thousand students at the Fort Sheridan offices training camp practiced a two hour march Friday. The procession ended with little fatigue among the men.
