If Jones calls Smith a thief and cites larceny it defends the slanderous word only if the watch was indeed stolen by Smith. If the watch was stolen by someone else, it is no defense to prove Smith committed some other larceny. Ford contends the Tribune headline Ford is an anarchist and that the article made no other justification for the word. The defense argues military preparedness in 1916 and Ford's public utterances led to violence is not a valid basis for the slander claim.
