Defiance of My Cigar and The Dogtown Speculation Tale
A fragment from 1834 recalls a comic yet sharp satire on Dogtown’s boomtown fever and a visit to Washington. It blends a mock defense of a cigar with a panorama of Dogtown’s land speculation, green schools, and failed city-building, then shifts to travelers’ notes on the Capitol, Webster and Clay, Cherokee affairs, and a border dispute between Arkansas and Texas.
