Reuters reports German infantry attacked south of Dickebusch lake between Ypres and Kemmel after a heavy bombardment on a wide front in Flanders. The assault appeared divisional in size. some parties crossed the front line into the eastern wood as fighting continued under clear weather.
Washington May 9 More than half a million American soldiers have been sent to France surpassing January forecasts of 500000. Secretary Baker avoided exact figures while stating the betokened goal surpassed. He noted no current or imminent shortage of light or heavy machine guns or Browning arms and emphasized rapid mobilization to support Allied lines. Provost Crowder placed the national army strength at about 1,227,000 under the selective service act.
Springfield broadcast reports May 9 that Frank Farrington, president of the Illinois Mine Workers, warns three coal operators associations against reducing coal prices below fuel administration figures. He says large buyers delay purchases hoping for later cuts, risking a fuel famine next fall as miners are already laid off.
A Swiss dispatch reports serious disturbances in the Austrian Hungarian fleet. Slavic and Italian descent crews caused unrest that was difficult to quell, prompting changes in the high command.
May 9 Burleson accused Roosevelt of alleging the administration punished newspapers that told the truth about wartime efficiency while sparing allies or antiwar papers. He demanded names to prove the claim, saying truth or falsehood could be demonstrated, and urged public judgment.
The war labor board heard the Commercial Telegraphers' union complaint against Western Union and Postal, alleging discharge due to union affiliation in violation of the war labor agreement. Joseph F. Rutherford head of the International Bible Students association and five other Russell founders were arrested in a Brooklyn raid by federal authorities. Officials charged the six sought to cause mutiny and unrest and to urge refusals of military service through articles in The Watch Tower The Bible Student and The Kingdom News. The Kingdom News had been suppressed previously. Also arrested: William E Van Ambergh Giovanni De Cecca A Hugh McMullen Robert J Martin and Frederick A Robinson.
Peoria Illinois May 9 Charles IL Kammann former principal of Lit n school and head of the Peoria branch of the German American Alliance was sentenced to three years in Leavenworth and a $5000 fine for espionage act violation He may appeal to the US Court of Appeals meeting in October in Chicago bonds set at 25000 by four friends Possible Supreme Court appeal if an adverse ruling The case centers on whether Kammann remarks were actionable Daniel Mahoney Pekin got 18 months for allegedly saying I hope the Germans win the war and then the Kaiser can come here and kill the capitalists He pleaded intoxication John C Weerts Glasford farmer convicted for opposition to conscription was fined 500 due to his age
London May 9 The official statement on aerial operations says flying again after rain was possible after 5 pm. Machines were sent out and four hundred bombs were dropped on targets along the front. Twelve hostile aircraft were shot down in air combat near Douai. A German observation balloon was destroyed in flames. None of our planes is missing.
AP reports the German assault south of Ypres from Voormezeele to Laclytte as heavy preliminary bombardment precedes ground advances on a five mile front. British and French troops repulse major thrusts while gains are made south of Dickebusch lake and Ridgewood. Australians gain ground west of Amiens as French penetrate south of Laclytte. Americans in Toul fortify artillery. Mesopotamia sees British advance toward Mosul, Ker kuk captured. Baker confirms 500,000 US troops may be in France soon. no ammo shortages.
Early returns from the St Paul city election forecast a decisive defeat for Julius F. Emme the socialist candidate for mayor. About one third of precincts show Lawrence C Hodgson with a majority of more than 2000 and his lead continues to grow.
Governor Holcomb refused to permit the Willard Fulton fight in Connecticut ruling the proposal violated state law. He informed James P Mulvihill of New Haven in a letter that the requested bout cannot take place in the state.
Marcus Mayer, former theatrical manager and long-time Lambs club member, died Wednesday at a private sanatorium in Amityville New York at age 76. His death closes a long career in stage management and entertainment circles.
Haig's May 9 bulletin says Germany, after heavy fighting, entered Allied front lines at Laclytte to Voormezeele in several points while repulsed at other locations. French troops advanced south of Laclytte, taking prisoners. rest of British front shows no special developments.

The war office announces artillery on both sides north and south of the Avre with no infantry action. In the Eastern Theater on May 7, artillery was active along the front from Lake Doiran to Monastir, with two enemy assaults against Serbian positions near Vetrenik and east of Cerna repulsed.
Rome May 9 Italy’s official communique reports bad weather restricting artillery and patrol activity along the entire front. The statement notes that operations were light due to conditions, with no significant engagements recorded.
British troops entered Kerkuk in Mesopotamia on May 7, 80 miles southeast of Mosul, meeting no opposition. Turkish forces retreated, leaving 600 men in the Kerkuk hospital, according to the British War Office on May 9.

The slightly wounded include Second Lieutenant Vernon Lee Sommers of Bloxan Virginia, Corporal Herbert Roy Perkins of Sumner Texas, Privates Joseph King Clark of Walton Indiana, John Edgar Davidson of Detroit, Allen Melville Schroeder of Cleveland, Royal Lee Stokley of Crawford Georgia, and Harry Fink of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.
