Urges Laws Against Tolls Across Mississippi Bridges
George D. Cayton of Hannibal writes Senator S. P. Spencer urging federal action to remove bridge tolls on freight and passenger traffic. He cites a 200 cent per ton charge for crossing the Mississippi and notes private companies once built, then leased, the bridges. Cayton recalls leverage by Jay Gould and the Wabash, with annual rentals cited and long public efforts to end tolls, hoping Congress can force change.
