Slight Improvement Noted For The Week
May 4 WADSTINGTON. Unemployment conditions show a slight improvement based on reports from 43 cities for the week ending April 66. Thirty five cities report a total surplus of 7000, down from the prior week. Six report a shortage totaling 450 and 20 show balance. Some regions report surplus or equal supply and demand with growing farm labor demand in several states.

Illinois Waterway Plan Aims For Great Lakes Gulf Link
May 4 Springfield Ill. The waterways bill to connect the Great Lakes with the Gulf via the Illinois Waterway passes the Senate and could reach final action in the House this week. The project would open deep water routes from the St Lawrence to the Gulf, linking Welland Soo Canals Chicago river Drainage canal to the Illinois Waterway. It would benefit cities along two main paths to the Mississippi and Gulf, with depths of 8 to 10 feet and locks at least 110 by 600 feet. Completion is estimated in five to six years, with power revenue beginning in year ten and profits from year eleven onward under federal control. The plan includes costs around 20 million and projected annual power revenue of 2.75 million.
