Police Seek 20 Percent Pay Rise For City Force

Quincy police petition for a 20 percent salary increase to be submitted to the finance committee amid budget preparations. Aldermen McNutt Ellis and Bergmann are reportedly on Mayor-elect O'Brien's expected finance panel. Police cite a 79 percent cost of living rise over five years and 19 percent food cost increase since 1917. Current pay is $85 for patrol, $90 for sergeants and detectives, with $10 expense allowance. Firefighters also seek raises, but funds may be tight due to costs of a double platoon system and lost saloon license revenue. City council members acknowledge salary needs across departments and seek funds if possible.
