Women barred from voting in April 13 primary in Quincy
County Clerk W J Smith said no separate ballots will be printed for women at the presidential preference primary on April 13 citing a supreme court ruling. Attorney General Brundage initially allowed women to vote but later said the election would not be invalidated if women’s votes were kept separate. The ruling places clerks in a bind over whether to permit an advisory straw vote for women on Wood or Lowden. The case cites Scown v Czarnecki and notes the legislature failed to authorize women to vote for delegates to national conventions or party committeemen.
