Maj. Gen. Geo. H. Thomas died in San Francisco this afternoon at 7:30 from apoplexy. The Central Pacific Railroad Co completed a temporary bridge over the American River. In British Columbia legislature a resolution carried to have Canada purchase Alaska and the State of Maine.

Wife murders and disappearances reported in several cities

News briefs from New Haven Chicago Wilmington and Ithaca recount a German matchmaker fatally shooting his wife near Westville, a South Bend engineer presumed dead by self harm, a Kent county peddler murdered with two arrests in suspicion, and a Long family poisoning in Ithaca with three deaths and one critical.

Congressional debate on Cuban belligerency and Texas admission

In Washington March 28 resolutions from the laws Legislature were presented in favor of Cuban belligerency and referred to Foreign Relations. Senator Drake questioned delay in reporting the Texas admission bill while Traumbull noted the issue of Texas annexation conditions and the possibility of admitting future states with or without slavery. Drake urged an early report, while Sumner pressed for immediate consideration without committee reference.
