A circulated report of ex president Johnson’s death was found to be premature. A Nashville dispatch says he is convalescent after violent illness and will begin a tour of campaigning the state in a few days. Editors’ opinions awaited, though likely modest.
Telegraph reports the death of Hon Epwarn Bates at his St Louis home after a career as a lawyer legislator congressman and attorney general. Born in Goochland County Virginia circa 1791 he joined the Missouri bar and held posts in territorial and state government and the Lincoln cabinet. He opposed Missouri Compromise repeals and supported Reconstruction era principles. He died in retirement amid high honor.
James G. Lyon carpenter and Wan Carruthers boatswain of the fever ship Jas Foster Jr were arraigned before the US Commissioner on cruelty to passengers. They were remanded to prison in default of bail to await grand jury action. Commissioner Jones discharged Dickerson and Ludlow on lack of evidence of guilt.
