March 24 The war department cabled Gen Pershing to forward definite formation of the exact battle front situation where the British troops face German onslaught. Officials kept to the London Berlin statements with no opinions. American officers, while cautious, remain confident of eventual repulse as details unfold Hour by hour.
Paris faced long range shelling from a German gun reported to be about 62 miles off, with 240 millimeter projectiles striking the capital at intervals since Saturday morning. American ordnance officers voiced disbelief, considering the feat extraordinary and potentially aimed at breaking French morale.
Elmer Ayres of Jerseyville pleaded guilty in federal court to failing to register for the draft. He was sentenced to one year and a day in Leavenworth. The Ayres family, religious zealots, argued the draft is ungodly. Two brothers, urged by their parents, initially refused, but chose to serve at Camp Pike, Arkansas.
Washington reports 33 liberty trucks, first output of quantity production ordered to supply the army with motor vehicles, left Lima Ohio Saturday for an eastern port to be loaded for France. The overland record will be watched as they are machine made and compared with the hand made sample trucks that passed gruelling tests. Assembling factories have parts on hand for some of the three ton rating models.
An official list released by the state department details 200 Americans held in German camps. It notes the deaths of Charles Hemphill, shot escaping in 1917, and Andrew Campbell Murtray, an aviator downed near Pargny in 1917. The list includes officers, seamen, engineers, and other prisoners from ships and raids, with names and camps such as Camp Brandenburg and Camp Gutersloh, and captures from ships Souchan Esmeraldas Campani Bergen Bulgarian Mount Temple Jacob Jones and more.
London March 24 official report says battles south of the Scarpe river continue with great intensity. British forces hold positions near St Quentin and Jussy amid heavy engagements, with notable gallantry by the 19th and 9th divisions and repeated enemy attacks repulsed. Berlin confirms the first stage of the France battle is ended with English forces beaten near Monchy Cambrai St Quentin and Lafere and fighting northeast of Ba paume Peronne and Ham.
In London on Saturday night the guns in France were distinctly heard with a continuous throb in high places. Many residents climbed to housetops to listen.

Washington dispatch reports 28 names on Saturday's casualty list including five officers. Killed in action Lieut Jefferson Felgs. died from accident Lieut Eugene R Wheatley. died of other causes Lieut Col William S Wells. wounded slightly Arthur S Gow and Lt Arthur Booth. The tally shows 1 killed in action 3 died of accident 8 died of disease 2 died of other causes 2 wounded severely 12 wounded slightly. Names include Bugler James D Galladay and Privates Herbert J Tucker among those listed.
German forces press the right flank near Ham as British lines retreat to stronger positions. Fierce fighting at Mary persists after a day of close quarters combat and a nighttime counterattack. British machine gunners on high ground helped stem the assault and save position amid heavy losses on both sides.
Springfield Illinois March 24 Illinios women were urged in a letter from Mrs Eleanor Wilson McAdoo chairman of the national womens committee for the third liberty loan campaign to rally to the standard for a record breaking subscription in this state beginning April 6 Offices for the activities of the womens committee have been established in the state house where the campaign will be directed by Mrs Howard T Willson state chairman
London report quotes Gen. Sir Horace Lockwood Smith-Dorrice saying nothing heard so far suggests nothing unexpected has happened. He cites no reason to conclude conditions are worsening and notes no unusual developments.

Berlin reports heavy fighting, 25,000 British prisoners, 400 guns, while Allied leaders concede serious but not alarming risk.
Four American patrolmen in France crawled toward a German listening post, tackled the guard from behind, and captured him without raising an alarm. They returned to their lines with the prisoner for examination by intelligence officers.
