In Chambersburg Pennsylvania on March 21 a 13 year old girl and two young ladies, daughters of neighboring farmers, were ravished by a negro. The 19 year old Com Norris, native of Chambersburg, was arrested and charged with the assaults. The community is roused and last Friday night an attempt was made to take Norris from jail.
A crowd estimated at no less than 500 gathered near the building. Speeches by prominent citizens urged calm and led to the mob dispersing. The prison has since been guarded by a strong force summoned by the sheriff. The assaulted young ladies are daughters of three respectable farmers.
Dispatches from Springfield report the death yesterday afternoon at his residence in Springfield of Col Hall Wilson for many years associated with the State Auditor office and the past four years Chief Clerk in that office. He began his army service in the late war as Major of the Twenty seventh Infantry and was later promoted to colonel of the Fifth Cavalry where he served with gallantry until resigning due to ill health. A gallant courteous gentleman the news of his death will bring sorrow to all who knew him.
