American forces, marching 100 miles from Villa, press the Mexican mountains as Villa evades capture in Casas Grandes region. Reports say Villa operates with help from scattered supporters while Carranza officials plan concentrated columns to trap him.
Mrs. Jesse Young English killed Arthur E. English a New York lawyer at their Frederick Maryland home after he allegedly pointed a revolver at her during a quarrel in front of their six year old daughter. She was later exonerated by a coroner’s jury after testimony of threats and brutality.
A Mexican report says Villa bandits mobilized to attack Presidio as Col. Sibley of the 7th Cavalry coordinates with Col. Riojas opposite Presidio. Carranza troops reportedly assist in defense amid ample ammunition flow to Mexican forces at border ports and through Laredo shipments.
London reports the Verdun thrust nears its fourth week with reduced infantry action on both sides. Air raids by French aviators target Conflans station and Metz while heavy shells cause fires. Western front artillery remains active but limited. in Russia sporadic fighting and Italian frontures show moves. Vienna notes gains north of Tolmino and 500 prisoners. In Arabia a British front reports a Turkish defeat near Aden. London also announces the Dutch steamer Palembang torpedoed off the Thames Estuary. all crew saved.
Senator John W. Weeks criticized Democratic congresstariff and taxation policies in a speech to the Swedish American club of Massachusetts on Saturday in Worcester. He called the Gent tariff a futile attempt to demonstrate a theory.
In Washington on March 18 the house army increase bill reached amendment stage after ten hours of debate with virtually unified support for national preparedness. Only Meyer London opposed. the senate bill also moves forward as administration pushes to keep other business aside. President Wilson indicates general approval of the Hay bill but not its details, while Speaker Clark hails the measure as satisfactory to Americans seeking a middle course between peace and preparedness.
Gen Gavira at Juarez says lack of Mexican resistance to cross-border troops proves public faith in Carranza. He cites liberal soldiers and citizens forming the constitutionalist army and argues Americans misunderstood Mexican aspirations for liberty. He praises the first chief and military leaders as safeguarding the fatherland.
Sixty factory workers arriving from Racine Wisconsin stirred Columbus New Mexico when they rushed from a train after hours without food and headed to a leading restaurant. Military patrols were dispatched, and the local weekly paper printed only legal notices on its press day. The telephone company barred civilians from long distance calls except locals or those known to the operator. Newspaper correspondents were barred.
March 18 Philadelphia Secretary of War Baker told the University of Pennsylvania Phil Gamma Delta chapter the American people are a fighting and cosmopolitan race. He urged preparedness to resist invasion and said peace rests on strength, citing troops on the Mexican border and urging undergraduates to be ready to serve the nation.
News of an engagement between British and Turkish forces near Aden was released by war officials. A Turkish force with three German officers attacked an outpost at Imad. British forces repulsed them and pursued the attackers four miles. Casualties included one Indian soldier killed, one British officer and 16 men wounded.
Lt. John Gaffney, who resigned as American censor general at Munich on request of the State Department, fled with the department Saturday denying charges that led to his removal. He says he never acted unneutral or criticized Secretary Breoan or state department officials and claims he protected British subjects under his guard.
London report says after three weeks of inactivity the main Russian forces beyond Erzerum resume westward advance toward Sivas. Turkish prisoners flood in as officers complain of German control. Russians near Mamahatan bridge within 60 miles of Erzinian on the road to Sivas.
London dispatch reports the Palembang crew and two Dutch passengers landed at Harwich after the ship exploded and sank. No lives lost, seven minutes afloat, crew saved by lifeboats. weather clear. Twenty crew members reached the sailors' home in London’s eastern district. One survivor could not confirm torpedo or mine impact. no submarine sighted.
