Low Mississippi River Leaves Barge Stranded
A lumber barge delivered to the Ingersoll company in Hannibal was left stranded on the riverbank due to the river's low stage. Sand bars have appeared as the Mississippi dropped over the past two weeks. Forecaster Waldron said the level is typical for the season. The upper Mississippi near Quincy shows a slight rise from thawing ice while the Des Moines River at Ottumwa opened after weeks of freezing. The main river froze from January 4 to 20 but no ice has since been removed. Local ice dealers had one chance this season during January when eight inches formed on the bay and lower river, but ten-inch ice was sought and unavailable as warmer weather set in.
