Europe notes Mr. Gladstone proposes a bill to disestablish the Irish Church and disendow Maynooth College. The plan includes a 10 year commission to guard church property, no new freehold appointments, and abolition of ecclesiastical courts and bishop peerages. If enacted, the Irish Church would be disestablished by January 1870.
Washington dispatch says Grant will not announce his Cabinet until Senate confirmation. He may press the Suffrage Amendment in his inaugural to seek peace and harmony. In a southern interview he says General Thomas stays in Tennessee and Sheridan remains in the West to press Indian suppression.
A morning fire in Jackson Mississippi burned the Clarion newspaper job office and bookbindery with losses of 2300, partly insured, and George C. Eyrich's book and stationery store, insured for 15000. The Clarion will resume tomorrow. Incendiary suspected. In Sterling Illinois, a Sunday blaze destroyed three frame buildings at the old Post Office corner, about 7600 in losses, incendiary likely. In Harrorp Connecticut, a blaze destroyed Woods Building including the Times office, costing forty thousand. Times to continue printing in Courant office.
In New Orleans on March 1 the House advanced a bill for five million thirty year gold bonds for public works funded by a special tax and swamp land proceeds. A joint resolution ratifying the fifth article passed both houses. The report also notes zinc at La Salle, a railroad location effort in Edwardsville, and Enoch West convicted of murder in Tazewell County with a 20 year term.
