Berlin dispatch reports German forces stormed into enemy trenches near Chavignon and captured ten Americans and a few French prisoners. The Western front action included renewed artillery and trench assaults with fighters engaging along the Aisne front and in the Champagne region.
A Brest Litovsk message to Petrograd reports a train escorted by guards to meet Russian delegates near Pskov signaling likely end of peace talks. German columns advance toward Luga Polotsk and Sebezh as Petrograd tensions rise with ambassadors exiting.
Washington March 2 The food administration issued rules limiting profit margins in distributing frozen poultry and cold storage eggs. Maximum advances over cost range from 3 to 6 percent for storers, merchants, wholesalers and jobbers, with higher bands for candled storage eggs and institutional buyers. Officials say aims are to cut distribution costs and reduce profit margins.
Major General Peyton March arrives as new chief of staff and commends American forces in France for their morale training and health. He criticizes censorship and urges looser wartime controls to inform the American public about expeditionary activities. He notes troops’ cheerfulness despite mud and shells and cites many having never left the United States.
Washington reports the money cost of the war remains around one billion dollars monthly. February outlays were just under January and December, with $1,002,878,608 spent. Ordinary war expenses and allied loans dominate, while tax receipts lag.
New York March 2 Republican National Committee chairman Myron T. Vienna March 2 The Austrian official communication claims ten thousand Russians have laid down arms and large quantities of ammunition carts and rolling stock have been captured by Austrians as an advance into Russia begins.
In Bayville Louisiana on March 2 three Black men named Jim Lewis Jim Jones and Will Powell were lynched by a white mob near Dell in Richland parish. The killings followed clashes between whites and Negroes near Delhi Sunray after a white farmer and a Black man were killed.
New York report says German newspapers claim New York City is protected by a 625 mile barbed wire fence and 50,000 soldiers guard the port. Chicago measures are strict, Hoboken is deserted, Cologne Gazette dated Jan 16 is cited.
Washington March 2 Director General McAdoo announced special travel rates for Confederate veterans to Tulsa Oklahoma for their summer reunion and for the Grand Army of the Republic meeting at Portland Oregon, with no transportation interference.
March 2 Rostov on Don falls to Bolshevik forces after a bloody battle. Gen. Kaledines and Gen. Koarniloff retreat toward Novo Teherkask as Soviet troops advance. Kornik rear guard resists while reinforcements move to Easterinoshiv to shield the retreat.
ST LOUIS March 2 The one eighth interest in the estate of late Adolphis Busch owned by his widow has been placed in the charge of a depositary named by Al Mitchell Palmer United States custodian of Sheneme property. Mrs Busch was last heard from in Switzerland and is believed to be returning soon to the United States Trustees said they would seek to regain possession upon her return. She filed a December 1916 tax return of 1,630,656. She traveled to Germany before the war to visit two daughters who had become German citizens.
New York March 2 American labor sends a message of cheer and resolve to the Russian people via a cablegram from Samuel Gompers president of the American Federation of Labor. The declaration warns that Prussian militarism threatens free Russia and that Germany aims to destroy Russian freedom and seize territory. Russians are urged to arm themselves to meet invading German troops.
At the International bridge in El Paso Mexican forces fired across the Rio Grande during rush hour Friday night. U S border patrol troops deployed along the river bank under cover of adobe shacks and prepared to return fire.
Senate progress on the war finance bill saw the banking and finance committees dispose of amendments to the administration measure for a war finance corporation. Debate centered on a proposal to authorize up to 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 in bonds and a capital issues licensing plan. Senator Smoot warned of inflation if wartime credit lengthened, while Owen proposed a five expert capital issues panel with Fed review within thirty days. Washington report from March 21.
Washington March 2 The food administration ruled that the presidents proclamation limiting brewers to 70 percent of last year’s grain use applies to temperance beers as well as beers and ales. Although prohibition beverages are exempt from alcohol limits they face the same foodstuff usage restriction.
Testimony to the stock yards wage arbitration nears completion with last witnesses expected. The arbitration before Federal Judge Samuel Alschuler will enter rebuttal and argument phases. Chester & Churchill testified that eight hour day would require plant changes and reduce production due to limited tanks and cooling space.
War department reports General Pershing advised 25 wounded in action on February 26. Seven Illinois men named: Sergeant Hugh Marsh Belleville. Privates Stanley Mindikowski Chicago Oliver R. Smith Ipavn Delbert Wiedmaier Chicago William Richter Chicago Ray Shelton Mount Erie Ill. Cook Paul Schoonack Georgetown Ill. Others from Ohio Kentucky Missouri Kansas Wisconsin Calif Georgia Ga Pa Mass etc. Additional slight wounds include Spring Field Ohio second lieutenant James C. Mymess Tarboro NC and 23 privates. Also two killed in accident and disease deaths include John Fisher Philadelphia pneumonia Joseph Bedard Burlington Vermont meningitis George Burling Jr Richmond Hill New York Joseph C Wellwood Bridgewater Connecticut scarlet fever.
Chicago March 2 letters introduced in the federal trade commission investigation of the packing house industry were read before examiner BLOM and counsel Francis J. Heney. Topics ranged from Argentine labor troubles to leaky cans to army and navy bacon specs and a large shipment of ham rejections. The hour long session included examiner Venes's remarks. Adjournment set for Monday, with an appeal pending over papers from Henry Veeder Swift and Co. vault and their possible presentation depending on court action next week.
MORRIS March 2 4 a juror Cobbligh in the case of Charles Munday tied to the LaSalle Street Trust and Savings Bank wrecking, diagnosed with measles after jury completion, forced a delay until Monday. Another juror is under observation and Judge Slusher may dismiss the current panel and call a new one.
American troops repulsed a strong German attack in the Toul salient amid a driving snowstorm. Casualties mounted as fierce hand to hand fighting followed a successful American defense. a West Point captain from the class of 1917 was killed. German losses included ten bodies in trenches and two officers captured.
