Official British War Office statement issued Wednesday night confirms an Eaplane bombing over the Menthe area of the Goast region killed a local child. Authorities say no further details were available pending investigations and safety measures.
London says German forces in Verdun area have extended their bombardment west of the Meuse but infantry attacks have slowed. French shells strike German positions near Le Preve wood and Thiacourt while Alsace sees no renewed German pushes. British lines remain largely quiet though front lengthens toward Lens and Somme per unofficial reports.
Paris reports the French auxiliary cruiser Provence was sunk in the Mediterranean. Four hundred survivors were rescued by French and British patrol vessels with no submarine seen. The ship carried five 20 cm cannons two 8 cm cannons and four 47 mm guns. Malta and Melos received survivors.
Washington March 2 A plan to promote naval officers by selection rather than seniority aims to raise efficiency and open higher command to more officers. The bill, prepared by the Navy Personnel Board, would require officers above lieutenant to be selected and would be executed by officers in grades above.
Washington a plan to create a broad civilian and industrial reserve for wartime needs was outlined by Representative Kahn. The measure would enlist noncombatants and civil professionals for potential army duty, with the president authorized to expand force levels up to 200000 in war, while Congress retains final approval. The House committee discussed amendments but took no final vote, with a Senate review of National Guard federalization expected next.
