Casualties from Hyde Park storm reported in Chicago

A severe June storm tore through Hyde Park and nearby areas causing multiple house collapses and at least two sun stroke deaths. Deputy U S Marshal Crofton Coffey was killed at Dexter Park Race Course by a roof collapse while guiding his horse. A drugstore owner Dr D Evers died after a wine cask toppled on him. Fifteen thousand birds were released as a small house blew down. The day brought cooler weather and forecasts of more rain.

Senate sessions weigh tax bill amid railroad and insurance tweaks

In Washington on June 29 the Senate defeated Cam eron's motion to reconsider the Texas Pacific Railroad bill, while debating extending the Kansas Pacific line to New Mexico. A Finance Committee insurance tax provision was added, delaying tax on dividends until paid in money, and savings bank deposits would not count as dividends. A proposed 50 cent per ton coal and shale duty was rejected, leaving current rates intact. several amendments, including a 1 percent ad valorem duty on live animals, were approved.
