First British Tanks Captured By Enemy Were Copied With Defects
Washington June 26 tanks on the western front show mixed results as an evolving weapon. Early British models were heavy and unwieldy, often failing to advance in wet ground, while French designs proved more handy and effective. Germans copied the concept after observing field use, but the core faults were already revealed by guarded English experiments. Tanks offer strategic advantage when paired with infantry as they straddle trenches and provide machine gun coverage, though crew endure cramped, smoky, and perilous conditions. The article notes anticipated future tank expansion and design changes.
