CHICAGO June 25 Lieut J R B dod and twenty Illinois National Guard Seventh Infantry men pursued twelve deserters who failed to entrain with their unit in Springfield. The detachment arrived Saturday in pursuit of the missing soldiers.
French and Mexican refugees arriving in Juarez say American soldiers killed at Carrizal lie unburied on the battlefield while Mexican losses are heavier than official figures indicate. They report 24 Mexicans buried near the site and Gen Gomez among those moved to Chihuahua City.
Chicago on June 25 reports more than 250 recruits joined the United States Army National Guard or the Alineis units on Saturday. Many also enlisted in the three provisional regiments being raised in the city, according to recruiting headquarters estimates.
The Carrizal engagement saw the Tenth Cavalry repeatedly charge into a Mexican ambush. Captain Charles T. Boyd was mortally wounded while leading troopers to capture a machine gun trench. Lieutenant Henry Adair assumed command after Boyd fell and led a second charge, with further casualties reported.
Washington June 25 Minister Ignacio Calderon of Bolivia says South and Central American republics seek U S Mexico mediation. He asked Mexican ambassadore designate Eliseo Arredondo if Carranza would accept mediation. Arredondo said he would relay the inquiry to Carranza but could not respond now. Calderon planned a similar inquiry to the American government Monday.
New York June 25 Gonzalo Sr Cordova Ecuadorian minister announced he would fly to Washington to confer with Latin American diplomats pursuing mediation between the United States and Mexico. He said he acted on instructions from Ecuador Foreign Minister Elizalde and urged Latin American ministers to use their good offices to avert conflict.
General Frederick Funston urged the War Department to demand the immediate release of Americans captured at Carrizal and held in Chihuahua City. He argued no state of war exists with Mexico and that the captives should be sent to Juarez for transfer to U.S. authorities under international law. Reports on Captain Boyd’s men were unclear, with Pershing’s future briefings anticipated.
Five men found at San Luis ranch recount Captain Boyd dismounting his troops to form skirmishers and leading a rush toward a ditch sheltering Mexicans and a machine gun nest. Boyd is wounded and killed in the final assault. Morey is shot but troops briefly outmaneuver Mexicans before sheltering in an adobe house as Mexican forces surround them. Adair and his men vanish into the town with uncertain fate.
