Cornell Professors Lead Six Month Brazil Expedition

Two Cornell University professors and ten students sailed from New York aboard the North America for Brazil for six months of scientific exploration. Senate Passes Militia Bill in Galveston Vote

In Galveston on June 24 the Senate approved the militia bill by 16 to 5 after a tense scene. Thirteen conservative Senators were restrained by the Sergeant-at-Arms and five released to secure a quorum, while eight remained under arrest. Outrage rose over the passage as a correspondent faced expulsion for calling Gov Davis’ wife and others lobbyists. The Governor would gain power to name all civil officers and an additional bill to organize the State militia, with governor appointments.

Casualties Run Over In North Clark Street Incident

A woman was fatally injured this morning on North Clark Street when struck by a heavy wagon. In Meendota Illinois a large fire destroyed thirteen business buildings last night, with losses estimated at forty to fifty thousand dollars. A Farmington Illinois mill and sash factory suffered fire damage yesterday.

Fatal Quarrel in Forsyth Ends in Self-Destruction

In Forsyth Mason County Hil two women quarreled over a dispute yesterday and one struck the other with a bean pole causing severe injuries. An officer pursuing the offender heard a gun report and found the assailant dead by suicide after entering another room to change clothes.
