Rockford Prepares for Drafted Army Cantonment
Rockford, June 23. In a grimly enthusiastic move, 2908 acres of farmland across 18 estates were relinquished to Uncle Sam for a cantonment to house Illinois division troops. A Chamber of Commerce committee arranged leases for nominal rent as engineers map the camp, water, and buildings. Army officials predict rapid progress with a September establishment and a ten mile moral zone. Local plans include two hotels, better markets, electrified rail service, new roads, and yearlong entertainment programs to welcome visitors.
