London reports a weekly British summary listing 27 vessels over 1,600 tons sunk by mine or submarine plus five under 1,600 tons. No fishing ships were lost. Arrivals reach 2,897 and sailings 2,993, with ongoing undersea warfare tolls and comparative weekly figures through the spring.
Russia diplomatic mission completed courtesy calls in Washington. Special Ambassador Bakhmetieff and Diplomatic Secretary Soukine met with Secretary Lansing and Counselor Polk while Lieut. Gen. Roop observed Baker. President Wilson and Vice President Marshall received greetings as mission plansProceed with conferences in coming weeks and tours of the capital.
Major Gen. Pershing American commander in chief held a long conference with Marshal Joffre on American affairs. He will visit an army engineering depot today and later a large airfield and school where armed motor car instruction is given.
Chicago June 21 The federal investigation of butter and egg dealers will target Elgin butter board members. Edwin C Clifford secretary has been subpoenaed to produce books and records and to testify before the grand jury.
In Washington on June 21 Senator Gore Democrat and chairman of the agriculture committee warned the administration food control bill would harm farmers, cost producers 250 million in wheat and 500 million in corn this year, and bring famine next year through reduced output. Senator Kenyon Republican defended the measure, calling food speculators highwaymen and arguing government controls could be justified under war powers. Other senators suggested requisitioning wheat and setting prices, while amendments aimed to limit government seizure of farm-held food. The debate touched on constitutional questions, police powers, and the impact on production and prices.
New York reports that about one third of the $100,000,000 Red Cross war fund has been raised in three days of a whirlwind campaign. By Wednesday bank and corporate contributions pushed totals toward the district’s $40,000,000 quota, with donors ranging from $1 to $1,000,000.
Chicago on June 21 reports its Red Cross drive nears completion with 2 594 262 dollars pledged toward an 8 000 000 city quota of 100 000 000. Two hundred ten solicitors under Frank O Wetmore canvass banks and firms, logging daily totals for display.

Chicago June 21 The number of men held for investigation in the Adams Express car safe robbery has risen to six. Also in custody are J R Andrews of Burlington Town Ward R Smiley of Monmouth Ill express messengers and James Burgess a leading platform superintendent. Police tapped a telephone line to learn when charges would be brought against Andrews and bail amount. The force also detained John Blake and his brother James, switchman, and Howard Palmer an Express employee not on duty. A bartender is being sought after a remark about something big happening. Grant D Curtis of the express company says loss totals about 22500 in gold silver bills and jewelry.
Philadelphia on June 21 welcomed the Italian war commission with a city atmosphere reminiscent of Rome. Detectives and secret service agents were unable to shield the commissioners from the fervent crowds of countrymen and admirers who crowded the streets and buildings.
Food chief Baron Rhondda, new food controller of Great Britain, is identified as David A. Thomas the coal king, rising to peerage in 1916 after succeeding Viscount Devonport who resigned. The selection places Rhondda among a line of titles offered and declined by peers including Lord North and others associated with the government.
Baron Moncheur head of the Belgian war mission expresses deep gratitude to the American people for material aid and sympathy. Bulgaria’s King Ferdinand reacts to Constantine’s abdication and possible Greek government change.
New York June 21 Renewed efforts to keep bunker coal transactions out of the federal court trial of Virginia coal companies and individuals for alleged conspiracy to restrain trade and fix coal prices met a setback. W H Adams Crozer Pocahontas Coal Co testified the firm acted for several Pocahontas coal producers and were paid monthly to supply output for shipments. The government contends a committee of the defendants handled bunker coal business. Adams said total output in 1916 was 1 750 000 tons.
Springfield Til June 21 Exemption boards for petitions for release from military service in Illinois have been sent to Washington. Gov Lowden said he would not publicize the list and would adjust personnel if needed. Each board will include a physician, many doctors not yet consulted, with changes possible. Adjutant Gen Dickson concentrates on this work, isolating in a hotel room to devote full time.

Springfield report says Governor Lowden must sift through more than 400 bills passed by the fiftieth General Assembly before final adjournment. The omnibus measure is not due to reach him until early next week as he plans to trim the stack substantially. Citizens seeking hearings on hikes must file written objections due to the high demand for the governor's time.
