From Picardy, June 7 Associated Press reports 300 German prisoners captured across a six mile front after two American attacks in the second battle northwest of Chateau-Thierry. American losses were heavy but German dead piled three deep in places. Prisoners, many new to the line, wore Prussian Guard bands. Private Carl B Mills of Visalia California recalled the first wave over the top as others filled advancing ranks. The Red Cross workers braved shells to aid wounded. no Americans reported as prisoners by the Germans. Private John B Flocken of Olney Illinois praised the fighting spirit under heavy machine gun fire.

The Norwegian steamer Vinland 1193 tons was bombed and sunk by a German submarine about 65 miles off Virginia on June 5. Nineteen survivors were landed at Cape May by a torpedo boat destroyer, and the Vinland’s crew were hospitalized at Wissahickon barracks.
Paris reports French and American troops northwest of Chateau Thierry advance, capture Veuilly-La-Poterie and Bouresches, and push positions north of Vinly and near Lisieres. More than 200 prisoners taken, aviation and artillery actions noted with bombardments over Roye Soissons and nearby areas.
London reports French forces operated successfully against Germans near Locre southwest of Ypres. French troops improved their line with local attacks early Friday morning and captured a few prisoners. A daylight raid by a small party of British troops at Strazeele yielded nine prisoners and a machine gun with no casualties. Artillery activity persisted on both sides.
Berlin dispatch reports German forces repelled Allied local attacks north of the Aisne and northwest of Chateau-Thierry. Southeast of Sacy German artillery prep preceded the capture of enemy lines on the Ancre river, taking 300 prisoners.
General headquarters reports revived artillery exchanges with reconnoitering activity. During an advance into the French lines west of Kemmel two officers and 50 men were captured. The situation is unchanged.
Washington June 8 Gen Pershing reports further advances by American and French troops near Chateau Thierry with severe enemy losses. An American raid in Picardy took prisoners including one officer and 25 unwounded men, conducted with French on the left. Artillery active along the Marne, Woëvre, and Lorraine fronts. raid yielded captives in Picardy.
In Istanbul the June fire destroyed much of the Sultan Selim quarter, leaving about fifty thousand homeless. Buildings along both sides of the mosque were ruined, but the mosque itself was spared, according to a Berlin based Norddeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung report.
June 8 report states the American freighter Argonaut of 531 tons gross register was torpedoed by a German submarine off the Scilly Islands on June 5. The ship formerly bore the name Albinglia and was owned by the German line.
