Intervention Alone Can Prevent Strike
Washington June 5 Only intervention by the federal government can prevent a general strike of telegraph operators employed by the Western Union and Postal Telegraph companies. S J Konenkamp president of the Telegraphers union said before leaving for Chicago. Destroyer Protects French Vessel Off Maryland Coast
A U S destroyer intercepted an attack by a submarine 65 miles off the Maryland coast at 9:30 AM Tuesday saving the French steamer Radioleine from destruction. The same ship rescued two survivors from the Edward R. Baird Jr., a 279 ton schooner bombed in the same area, bringing the tally of raiders’ ships sunk or damaged to seven schooners and four steamers. Navy officials released the brief report from Secretary Daniels noting the Radioleine later reached an Atlantic port.
