Lieutenant Douglas Campbell of California becomes the first American ace in the flying corps after shooting down a German biplane near Pont-A-Mouss. His fifth win awaits official confirmation and shares the air with pilots like Edward Rickenbacker. Campbell and others patrolled for an American observation plane returning from British bombing missions when the German aircraft engaged.
